1823 First Edtns Full Set 45 Vols British Essayists Rev Lionel Thomas Berguer VG. This is a full set, and scarce in this good condition, of all 45 volumes, complete with all 10 portrait frontispieces. All volumes are square and tight, 3/4 leather over marbled papered boards. Prelims and finals have foxing spots, frontispiece portraits have foxing around them and set off as usual, but there is no foxing to pages which remain clean and crisp, with only the very occasional spot commensurate with the 200 years age, no writing nor tears.

Spines have black labels with titles and gilt tooling. Light shelfwear is evident to corners, spine ends and surface rubbing but is not heavy. Head of spine to volume 4 is frayed. This is a good set.

Few details are recorded of Berguer, who was a young acquaintance of Sir Walter Scott to whom he inscribed stanzas in 1815. He wrote poetry and political pamphlets, the latter successful enough to be go through several editions. He published in the Spectator, Guardian, Observer, Tatler, and other periodicals all of which are included in this set.

Born in 1789 he died in 183331? He was editor to this comprehensive set in 1823 when he was but 34 years old.
