This sale is for an EARLY VICTORIAN FULL LEATHER hardback COMPLETE SEVEN VOLUME SET entitled " The Works of Mrs Hemans, " with " A Memoir of Her Life, " by Her Sister, with fine engraved frontispiece of the author by William E. West/Edward Scriven and title page illustrations drawn by Mrs Hemans and engraved by J.The set was published by William Blackwood and Sons, of Edinburgh and London, in MDCCCXLIV (1844 [Vol I]), MDCCCXLIII (1843 [Vol II, Vol III & Vol VII]), MDCCCXLI (1841 [Vol IV, Vol V & Vol VI]). The books measure 6.5 inches x 4.25 inches, will require 6.75 inches along your bookshelf and have 352 + 356 + 390 + 343 + 326 + 326 + 377 pages, which are richly gilt edged to all rims. They are fine bindings, bound in contemporary embossed decorative full leather with gilt tooling to the boards and spines and five raised bands of leather across the spines.
The books are in very good condition for their age, internally neat and clean, with minor wear to the ends of the spines of the embossed leather hardback covers, with a previous owner's gift inscription at the front of the first volume "Emilia Lloyd from her husband 18 January 1846", and Emilia Lloyd's signature dated 1894 on the blank page at the front of each volume, and no other ink or pencil markings in any of the books. The bindings are very good with no loose or missing pages. As issued, there are no dust-jackets. A wonderful EARLY VICTORIAN COMPLETE SEVEN VOLUME SET - fine books in fine condition.
